    Hello 2020

How is it 2020 already?! Last January, I wrote a list of things I wanted to accomplish in 2019. I’ve just looked back over them and, perhaps not unsurprisingly, I’ve not managed to get through all of them! My goals for 2020 are simple – to have baby number two and get used to life as a family of three. Of course there are always jobs to do around the house and garden, trips to take, family to visit, but this year my focus is just going to be on Dylan, the new baby and Mik. We’re already halfway through this pregnancy and it’s starting to feel very real. We’ve…

Going Natural With Norfolk Natural Living Deodorant

Natural deodorant is one of those things I’ve not gotten on with in the past. I’ve tried a few and have never found one that works and I’ve also not enjoyed the fact that the majority were unscented. Norfolk Natural Living’s Deodorant has completely changed my view on natural deodorants. The packaging is smart, it smells great (not at all synthetic) and best of all it actually works. Norfolk Natural Living’s deodorant is 100% natural, free from toxins, packaged in completely recyclable bottles and never tested on animals. The parabens and aluminium found in traditional deodorants have been replaced with essential oils and added natural minerals. The deodorant is perfectly suited…

Magical Personalised Christmas Books for Kids

This year I’ve come across two completely magical personalised Christmas books for kids and I can’t wait to see how much they are enjoyed. Reading with Dylan is one of my favourite things, especially now that he’s starting to understand and match pictures to words. When I was little, my dad used to read The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey to us every Christmas Eve and I really can’t wait to start some Christmas reading traditions with Dylan. My sisters and I used to look forward to the Christmas story and we even read it together the last time we all stayed with Dad on Christmas Eve which was just…

    A Little Announcement

As of May next year, we will become a family of four. Dylan is going to be a big brother! We are all very excited and now that I’m finally starting to get past the morning sickness (which has in no way been limited to the morning), I’m feeling like I can finally start looking forward to and planning for baby number 2. First step is to turn our spare room into Dylan’s new bedroom. We’d like him to be settled in there before baby arrives so will be starting work on that asap!

    Being a Stay-at-Home Mum

A few months ago, I made the massive decision to give up the job I loved to stay at home and look after Dylan. It took me so long to come to that decision as I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am but ultimately I just couldn’t see myself leaving Dylan in childcare for a minimum of three full days a week. Since handing in my notice I’ve definitely had some wobbles where I’ve wondered if I’ve done the right thing, but most of the time I do feel really lucky that I’m able to be a stay-at-home mum and look after him while he is still…

    Ultimate Chocolate Cake

Sometimes chocolate cake can be a bit hit or miss. There is nothing worse than biting into a slice of chocolate cake only to find that it’s dry with just a hint of chocolate. A chocolate cake should be moist with a deep chocolatey flavour that punches you in the face and this ultimate chocolate cake recipe delivers on both fronts. It’s not difficult to make the cake itself although it does require an extra couple of steps and ingredients compared to a standard chocolate cake. Believe me it’s worth the extra few minutes! I made a double batch of icing. For the first batch of icing, I used white…

    Adventures With A Toddler

Every day with a toddler is an adventure. Dylan seems to have never-ending energy nowadays and loves getting outside to explore. In The Woods Last week we pulled on our wellies and headed outside into the woods which back onto our house. Now that the weather is turning, Dylan had lots of fun watching the leaves falling off the trees and squishing the soggy leaves on the ground. We spent a long time exploring a puddle. We both splashed, he fished for twigs under the water and he fell on his bottom where he stayed for a good few minutes. After that we bailed home, both covered in mud and…

Natural Light and a Happy Home

When we looked around this house for the first time, we just loved how much natural light it had. Fast forward four years and it’s still one of my favourite things about our house. We’ve repainted most of the rooms with pale colours to make the most of the light and during the summer months the house is such a lovely airy place to be. It’s made even better by the very long days we get here in the North East of Scotland. During the peak of summer, it doesn’t really get properly dark at all. Scottish Winters Of course, the opposite is true during the winter when it feels…

    Bookshelf #3

Having a toddler running around the house means I have very little time to pick up a book so I feel like I’ve not read a huge amount recently. The handful of books I have read though I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. I was given Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood for my birthday. I hadn’t heard of it when I unwrapped it and I’m not too sure how it had passed me by. It’s a long book but I was intrigued right from the start and got caught up in the story of Grace Mark’s life. It is based on the murders of Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery which occurred…

How To Make A Rainbow Cake

Back in July, I made a rainbow cake for Dylan’s 1st birthday party. It took me a long time to decide what kind of cake I was going to make and I’d been looking forward to making him his first cake since pretty much before I got pregnant! A lot of research went into making the perfect cake – I spent hours Googling “how to make a rainbow cake” – and I was so pleased with how well it turned out. Lots of the cakes I bake look amazing in my imagination but I don’t manage to pull them off in real life. Thanks to my extra research, this one…
