What Not to Say to a NICU Mum – 9 Things to Avoid

Having had two premature babies, each needing weeks of neonatal care, I thought I was just about qualified to write a list of what not to say to a NICU mum or dad. Hopefully this will help if you have a friend or family member who is going through this tough experience. 1. “When will you get home?” This is a tricky one to answer. Do you mean when will I get home or do you mean when will baby get home, because the chances are I will get home much sooner than baby. In the worst cases, mum and dad might not actually be sure baby is going to…

Harris’ Arrival – Having A Premature Baby During A Global Pandemic

Having a premature baby is hard, but having one during a global pandemic was on another level. Harris arrived 9 weeks early. He just had to do one better than his big brother by arriving even earlier and during the coronavirus pandemic. During my pregnancy with Dylan, I developed pre-eclampsia which led to him being born ahead of schedule. This meant that when I was pregnant with Harris, I had extra monitoring and was seen by the consultant throughout my pregnancy. Aside from a bit of sickness early on and some back/hip pain as the pregnancy progressed, my blood pressure was behaving and everything seemed to be going really well…

    A New Arrival

On March 15th 2020 we welcomed our second little boy into the world. Harris Finn 3lb 13oz Harris was born 9 weeks early so it was all a bit of a suprise to say the least. He spent just over 5 weeks in hospital until he was strong enough to come home. Having him home is the best feeling and Dylan loves being a big brother. Our house is full of love, cuddles and so many nappies!

Favourite Recipes To Share With Baby

I love food, Mik loves food and we are so pleased that Dylan also loves food. I thought I would put together a list of our favourite recipes to share with baby. We still love to eat these meals together even though Dylan is definitely now a toddler, not a baby any more. Banana oak pikelets These are great for breakfast, as a snack while out and about or as a quick lunch when defrosted from the freezer. We’ve tried lots of flavours and our favourites are banana and cinnamon, cheese and tomato or cheese and pea. Porridge with plums and almond This recipe isn’t officially a baby/toddler recipe but…

    A Little Announcement

As of May next year, we will become a family of four. Dylan is going to be a big brother! We are all very excited and now that I’m finally starting to get past the morning sickness (which has in no way been limited to the morning), I’m feeling like I can finally start looking forward to and planning for baby number 2. First step is to turn our spare room into Dylan’s new bedroom. We’d like him to be settled in there before baby arrives so will be starting work on that asap!

    Recently

Recently we’ve been so busy, we’ve hardly had time to breathe. Wedding Bells Dylan’s first birthday week was all go! We kicked off with a wedding in Aviemore so my mum and step-dad came up to look after Dylan for the day. It was the first time I’d left him during the day for more than an hour or so and I was really nervous but everything went ok and he had a brilliant day with his grandparents. Luckily the wedding was close to the hotel where we were staying so I was able to nip back to feed him and put him to bed which made me feel much…

    One

And then he was one. Our tiny little baby boy is now a cheeky toddler. Happy first birthday Dylan. It feels like yesterday that we met you but it also feels like we’ve known you forever. You’ve come so far in the past year and have turned into such a happy boy. You are an adventurer and are becoming so confident with walking. Emptying out the sock drawer is one of your favourite things to do. Let’s hope you learn how to put the socks back soon! You smile and wave at everyone you meet which can make a quick trip to the shops take much longer than planned as…

    On The Move

For a few weeks now, since our trip to the Lake District in fact, Dylan has officially been on the move. He’s been showing interest in standing for a long time but didn’t seem at all bothered about crawling. If we put him on his tummy, he’d tolerate it for a few minutes but made little effort to crawl. That changed about a week or so before he he actually crawled. When we put him on his tummy, he started wriggling and trying desperately to move. He got so frustrated but finally managed to slither across the room – I wouldn’t call it a crawl and it took forever but…

    BabyLed Spreads

Dylan loves to eat. I’m not exaggerating when I say that he would happily eat all day long if he could. I’ve never struggled at all to get food into him and he’s been jumping up the centiles since starting solids which is amazing as he was so small for the first few months of his life and we struggled so much with feeding in the beginning. He’s full of joy the moment food is put in front of him and is always up for trying new flavours and textures. One thing I’ve steered away from is giving him overly sweet foods, mainly because I don’t want him to start…

    Sensory Play Ideas

Watching Dylan explore the world around him is one of my favourite things about being a mum. Seeing things through the eyes of a baby makes everything feel much more exciting. Just a walk to the shop around the corner to buy some milk becomes a great big adventure with birds to listen to, cars to watch speeding past and a handful of new people to smile at. Being at home is maybe not quite as interesting as he spends more time here so is more used to it. I’ve got a few sensory play ideas for around the house which Dylan loves so I thought it would be worth…
