    Sensory Play Ideas

Watching Dylan explore the world around him is one of my favourite things about being a mum. Seeing things through the eyes of a baby makes everything feel much more exciting. Just a walk to the shop around the corner to buy some milk becomes a great big adventure with birds to listen to, cars to watch speeding past and a handful of new people to smile at. Being at home is maybe not quite as interesting as he spends more time here so is more used to it. I’ve got a few sensory play ideas for around the house which Dylan loves so I thought it would be worth…

    Ten Minute Time Out

Yesterday, Dylan was having one of those grizzly days. He was just getting over a cold and hadn’t been sleeping well for weeks. I was trying to pursuade him that a nap would be a brilliant idea before his swimming class but he was having none of it. I decided to leave half an hour early to see if he would drift off in the car. Don’t ask me why I thought this would be a good idea – he absolutely hates going in the car and pretty much always screams blue murder! Not surprisingly, he didn’t fall asleep and was not happy with me one bit. We gave up…

    Mum Guilt

Does anyone else suffer from mum guilt? Since Dylan has arrived I find myself feeling guilty for the littlest of things like wanting half an hour to myself for a soak in the bath or hoping he will have a nap in his cot so that I can make a cup of coffee with two hands! Of course, there are the bigger things as well. I feel unbelievably guilty that I gave birth to him so early and wasn’t able to keep him safe for the whole 9 months that most babies get. I feel really angry that my body decided to make him come into the world before he…

    Favourite Things

Sometimes it feels as though I’ve got no time for myself any more but on those rare occasions that Dylan actually falls asleep in his cot or basket, instead of on me, I find myself missing him even when I am right there. This is one of those moments. I’m sitting next to Dylan as he sleeps peacefully, almost hoping that he will wake up and need a cuddle from me. It’s sad to think that one day he will be big enough that he no longer needs me to comfort him when he wakes up. Even though I rarely sleep in stretches longer than 4 hours any more, I…

    Our Baby Essentials

It’s hard to believe that Dylan is now 17 weeks old! Since those first weeks in hospital which dragged horribly, time has just flown by. I thought I would list our baby essentials which we couldn’t have been without during these first few months. I read loads of these kind of posts while I was pregnant so hopefully it will come in useful to someone! Baby Slings We have three baby slings and they have been a lifesaver for us as Dylan hates being put down! We have baby bouncers, swings and a carrycot but he will only tolerate them for a few minutes on a good day, so without…

Beautiful Baby Gifts from Tilly & Jasper

During my pregnancy, I couldn’t help browsing every baby website I could find to pick out items for our newborn and since Dylan has arrived I’ve spent countless hours doing the same while we’re snuggled up on the sofa for feeds. One website which I really love is Tilly & Jasper. It sells lots of gorgeous items from clothes to swaddle blankets and also caters for older children. What We’ve Got We have this super soft bamboo muslin and this hooded towel. The muslin is by far my favourite out of all of the muslins we have – and believe me we have a lot! It really is beautifully soft…

    Ahead of Schedule

Welcome to the World Introducing our little Dylan James. July 10th 2018 5lb 0.5oz 45cm long Labour Dylan arrived 6 weeks early when I was just 34 weeks, 2 days pregnant. I’d been in and out of hospital for the month beforehand with high blood pressure and some symptoms of pre-eclampsia. I spent the Saturday night before Dylan arrived in hospital and as I was leaving on Sunday was told that I would likely be induced at 36 weeks. However, Dylan had other ideas and my waters broke at 3.30am on Tuesday 10th July. The day before my hypnobirth classes were due to start – typical (although at least we’d…

    Baby Prep – The Nursery

I’m so excited that we’ve finally finished decorating the nursery for our little one! Even though baby will sleep in our room for the first few months, I wanted to have his/her bedroom all ready before the birth so that we don’t need to stress about painting or buying furniture in those early months. I’m really pleased with how the room has turned out and I think it was well worth all of the hours of deliberations! Colour Scheme As we don’t know if we are having a boy or a girl, we wanted to go for a gender neutral colour scheme. I love white as I think it makes…

Baby Prep – What We’ve Bought So Far

Preparing for baby’s arrival is a little overwhelming. There is so much stuff you need to buy but it’s sometimes hard to figure out what is actually needed and what is just good marketing. With just two months to go before baby arrives, here are some of the things we’ve bought so far. Sleeping There is lots of advice out there about safe sleeping. Based on what we’ve read, we have decided to use baby sleeping bags but also have some swaddling blankets on hand in case we need them. For the very early days, we’ve got a GroSnug which is suitable for babies between 5lbs and 12lbs. It’s been…

Baby Prep – What I’m Reading

I’ve found it a bit overwhelming just how much information is available on pregnancy and looking after your newborn. There are a few books which have been helping me through so I thought I would share them with you. There is so much to think about and being a first time mum I really want to make sure I’m doing everything right, especially after my previous pregnancy ended in such a traumatic way. I feel a bit paranoid that I’m going to do something wrong which will affect my baby. These books have helped me feel a little more informed and in control.
