What Not to Say to a NICU Mum – 9 Things to Avoid

Having had two premature babies, each needing weeks of neonatal care, I thought I was just about qualified to write a list of what not to say to a NICU mum or dad. Hopefully this will help if you have a friend or family member who is going through this tough experience. 1. “When will you get home?” This is a tricky one to answer. Do you mean when will I get home or do you mean when will baby get home, because the chances are I will get home much sooner than baby. In the worst cases, mum and dad might not actually be sure baby is going to…

    A Little Announcement

As of May next year, we will become a family of four. Dylan is going to be a big brother! We are all very excited and now that I’m finally starting to get past the morning sickness (which has in no way been limited to the morning), I’m feeling like I can finally start looking forward to and planning for baby number 2. First step is to turn our spare room into Dylan’s new bedroom. We’d like him to be settled in there before baby arrives so will be starting work on that asap!

    Baby Prep – The Nursery

I’m so excited that we’ve finally finished decorating the nursery for our little one! Even though baby will sleep in our room for the first few months, I wanted to have his/her bedroom all ready before the birth so that we don’t need to stress about painting or buying furniture in those early months. I’m really pleased with how the room has turned out and I think it was well worth all of the hours of deliberations! Colour Scheme As we don’t know if we are having a boy or a girl, we wanted to go for a gender neutral colour scheme. I love white as I think it makes…

Baby Prep – What We’ve Bought So Far

Preparing for baby’s arrival is a little overwhelming. There is so much stuff you need to buy but it’s sometimes hard to figure out what is actually needed and what is just good marketing. With just two months to go before baby arrives, here are some of the things we’ve bought so far. Sleeping There is lots of advice out there about safe sleeping. Based on what we’ve read, we have decided to use baby sleeping bags but also have some swaddling blankets on hand in case we need them. For the very early days, we’ve got a GroSnug which is suitable for babies between 5lbs and 12lbs. It’s been…

    Babymoon in Lake Garda

We recently returned from a wonderful week in Lake Garda. It was our babymoon – our last holiday as just the 2 of us!  I was 27 weeks pregnant, so just on the limit of being allowed to fly without a doctors note. We chose Lake Garda because of the relatively short flight and the not too hot late May climate. We’d been to Lake Como a couple of years ago at the same time of year so knew more or less what to expect. The Hotel Our hotel – Hotel Corte Valier – was less than half an hour from Verona airport, in Lazise near the south of the…

Baby Prep – What I’m Reading

I’ve found it a bit overwhelming just how much information is available on pregnancy and looking after your newborn. There are a few books which have been helping me through so I thought I would share them with you. There is so much to think about and being a first time mum I really want to make sure I’m doing everything right, especially after my previous pregnancy ended in such a traumatic way. I feel a bit paranoid that I’m going to do something wrong which will affect my baby. These books have helped me feel a little more informed and in control. Mother and Baby Pregnancy Milestones This gives a…

    The Next Chapter

It’s been a very long time since I’ve posted here so let me tell you why. At the end of November 2016, Mik and I took a trip to Munich to visit the Christmas Markets. We had an amazing time and the icing on the cake was a surprise proposal underneath the giant Christmas tree in Marienplatz! We decided pretty much right away that we’d like a small wedding in Santorini where we had spent an idyllic week a couple of years before. In the week before Christmas, we paid a deposit to secure our venue and wedding date – May 25th 2017. Just the very next day, we were…
